What Can I Do? Get out of Your Comfort Zone

At the beginning of any new Administration, there will be changes. The current transition has been particularly tumultuous. The ripple effect on our states, communities and campuses have touched us all. So what can we do? Below are some thoughts – and resources from Gender on the Ballot – that guide my steps in uncharted territory.
For me, this meant participating in 50501 (50 protests, 50 states, one day) last week and updating my list of contact information for elected officials at the federal, state and local level. This week it means contacting my Congresswoman (done) and writing this blog. Next week and for the rest of the semester it means trying to meet the needs of the students in my Women & Politics class to ensure their success and support transformative leadership.
Keep in mind that nonpartisan doesn’t mean impartial.
Where you live, work and/or go to school may not always be conducive to overtly partisan expression, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t express an opinion. Evidence-based communication, telling your own story and listening to others can go a long way toward changing the climate of your classroom, home or workplace. It will also help you find kindred spirits along the way. It’s also OK to protect yourself in situations that aren’t respectful or safe to disclose.
Take care of yourself and others. We can’t change the world every day. The energy to engage in advocacy and social change can come in waves, and has many different looks. See “Rest is resistance: Black Women ignore Trump to find peace.”
Recognize that there is a gender dimension to most things – including politics, and intersectional dynamics of race, class, ability, LGBTQ+ and other identities are interlocking. It’s an opportunity to learn and build bridges.
Even when we can’t make them do better, we need to make sure they know better. Speak up.
Increasing representation anywhere increases representation everywhere. Go and grow where you are.
