July #DemDebate: Top Tweets
Twenty of the Democratic candidates for President faced off this week in the second debate of the 2020 cycle, and the Internet had a lot to say. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite tweets here, enjoy! (And if you’re feeling nostalgic, June Tweets are here!)
We weren’t the only ones excited to see so many women on stage…
I know we’re all engrossed in the issues right now, but everyone, take a deep breath with me and just look at this screenshot.
Two women of color are debating each other on the Presidential stage for the first time in our nation’s history.
Just … wow. #DemDebate pic.twitter.com/4JJijInv9K

Is there anyone who would disagree that having three women on this stage has made this debate way better?#DemDebate2

My 5 yr daughter: “Kamala is on! She’s my hero.” Having these women – esp women of color – running for President is changing the way all little girls think about women’s leadership. #DemDebate

The thought occurs to me that if women had been in charge of the world from the start, it would be unlikely that we would have decided the best way to pick a leader was to pit people against each other on a stage.

This! This is why it’s great that there are multiple women running for office! When you’re not the only one, you don’t have to carry the burden of representing an entire part of the population.

There’s too much gender stuff right now in this presidential debate. I can’t keep up. Which yay! But also, so much. #GenderLens2020

Some great points were made about what was and *wasn’t* being talked about on stage:
Women are paid just 80 cents on the dollar compared to men.
Black women earn just 61 cents and Latinas just 53 cents.
To hear our presidential candidates talk about this issue at the #DemDebate is long overdue — and only the FOURTH time in history it’s been asked about.

So we talked about healthcare, immigration, and gun violence in Detroit without mentioned black people at all…. #DemDebate #BlackWomenLead

Every candidate during the #DemDebate should be asked to go on record with where they stand on these issues important to women and the world at large #genderontheballot

We have :15 minutes left in #DemDebate and even with three women on the stage (plus one female moderator) we’ve had no questions on gender, pay equity, child care, reproductive rights, caregiving, etc. #genderontheballot @onGender

The format doesn’t allow time to go into detail, which also favors men. Voters expect/require women to go into detail, holding them to a higher standard, to prove they are qualified for the job. Men are assumed to be qualified. @onGender

It was also comforting to know we weren’t the only ones stressing about the pace:

Limiting the debate responses to 6 seconds is actually a sweet nod to Vine

And of course, Twitter brought the jokes:
